Bus Boycott

On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks was ordered to give up her seat on a bus so that a white man could sit down. Parks refused on a matter of principle; she felt she had the right to sit there. This was not the first time a black person had done this, but Parks's refusal sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and so it is remembered as one of the most important acts of the civil rights movement.
